Small Stream Browns Are My Favorite

StreamOfTime_photos's 1Browns album on Photobucket

The butter brown bellies and the amazing spectrum of colors are my weakness.

Keep those brook trout.  They are beautiful but they are about as dumb as a box of rocks.  You can catch them on a bare hook almost.

When a brown gets a little bigger, it is actually an accomplishment to fool them and hook and land them in tight quarters.

I May Be A Little Crazy But I Am NOT Stupid

opening weekend trout fishing looks like a wash for me. Going to be too cold during the overnights and the nine inches of snow in the last 24 hours will make walking treacherous and foolhardy. I enjoy fishing for trout but my knees and back would suffer if I went out.

Lost In The Woods

My wife's new hobby is hiking due to all the bike trails being closed for the winter.

Opening Day Outlook

The two days prior to opener will be the coldest days of the winter so far.  That may have a lock jaw effect on the trout.

Don't hit the water before 10am and pick a short stretch to fish.

Scout the day before around 10am to see what time the shell ice comes off.

Target slow deep water with a feed funnel near to it.

Think about where there are springs upstream of your target area.

Sunday afternoon looks better then Saturday.

Remember big, deep and slow.

The Old Cabin In The Woods

When I find places like these, I like to try to imagine back when it was built.

I try to figure out what was so appealing to the builders to pick this site to call home.

These remnants of a family's hopes and dreams were cut short for some reason.

Such is life in the olden days in rural Wisconsin.

Male trout

There is not always a kype on the lower jaws.  Males have a more elongated pointed head.

Male or female trout

These rainbows are very easy to tell the difference.  When they are older the lack of a kype tells you it is female.

If there is no kype look for the distance between the corner of the eye and the tip of the top jaw.  This is typically shorter if it is a female.

Headwaters Ash Creek

Fifteen years ago I caught 20 brookies and a tiger from this hole without moving a muscle.

The hole is now devoid of life due to a Gill Lice epidemic.
